Explore the Heart of Hayton & Beyond
Nestled in the beautiful Cumbrian countryside, our village of Hayton is the perfect base for exploring everything this historic corner of England has to offer. We're situated just two miles from the charming market town of Brampton and a short seven-mile drive from the historic city of Carlisle, right on the doorstep of Hadrian's Wall country.
Whether you're a walker, a history enthusiast, or just looking for a relaxing pint in a picturesque setting, you'll find plenty to discover right on our doorstep.
Village Highlights
A Village with History
The name Hayton means "hay farm," a nod to our agricultural roots. A leisurely stroll around the village reveals lovely old stone cottages and the historic St. Mary Magdalene Church, parts of which date back to 1780.
The Famous Walnut Tree
Our village green is home to one of the oldest walnut trees in the country – a true local landmark and also close to the pub.
Hayton Village Gardens
If you're visiting in the summer, don't miss the Hayton Village Gardens open day. It's a wonderful chance to peek into beautiful, private cottage gardens, with artworks on display and refreshments often available at the village primary school.
Days Out on the Doorstep
Step Back in Time
We are perfectly placed for exploring Hadrian's Wall, with its wealth of Roman history and breathtaking views, just a short drive away. History doesn't stop with the Romans; you can also find the impressive Edmond Castle nearby.
City, Coast or Country
Fancy a city break? Historic Carlisle with its castle and cathedral is less than 15 minutes away by car. For nature lovers, the northern fells of the Lake District, the North Pennines, and the tranquil Talkin Tarn are all within easy reach.
On Your Bike
The Hadrian's Wall Cycle Route passes right through the village, making us a popular stop for cyclists exploring the region. In fact it's so popular that the Tour de France 2027 opening stage will being going past our village.
So, whether you're ending a day on the wall, taking a break from a bike ride, or simply popping in from the village, pull up a chair and make yourself at home. We're at the heart of it all.
